Sometimes, it's good to just enjoy a Saturday at home with your loved one. Tea, beans and toast, TATERS, PRECIOUS, and of course, eggs just the way Cookie likes them - runny and messy. Home fries are my favouritest thing ever. Dice them up, toss them with some salt and pepper, maybe some peppers and onions if you have them... Hearty noms, and good for the soul, too.

I eat my feelings, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. ESPECIALLY when my idea of comfort food is a slice of the absolutely wonderful Empire's supreme pizza. A New York style pizzeria right on Congress in downtown Tucson, the lunch combo is a good, cheap snack, and I take any excuse I can to take advantage of it. They have a rotation of daily specials that always keep things interesting, but I have yet to have a bad slice of pie from this place. And, to be frank, the hole-in-the-wall bar in the back is one of my favourite perches in downtown. You get a chance to check them out, please do! I have yet to be disappointed, but be ready to wait. It's worth it.
If there's one thing that the Southwest has down pat, it's Mexican food. In this town, there are as many Mexican restaurants of any variety as there are coffee shops in Seattle. Spicy? Mild? Fast food? Sit down? Food truck? Anyway you want it, there's someone out there that has just what you need. It's been a delightful challenge to try them all out and find my favourite, but if you like rustic, sit down, I'm-definitely-taking-half-of-this-home Mexican food, La Parilla Suiza is definitely one you should try.
Lotus Garden is one of the Tuscon Originals, an establishment that's been around since 1968, and is still the oldest family-owned Chinese restaurant in Tucson. It's a rather nice restaurant, a fine dining experience with Chinese and Szechuan classics, as well as a rather lovely gift shop. The owner's octegenarian mother still works there almost every day, it's definitely a family business, and the love and care is easy to see.
If there's one thing you know Cookie loves, it's taters, precious. Today, she wanted to try a riff on the traditional shepherd's pie -- usually, mashed potatoes with meat and veggies on top, in lieu of gravy, a hearty peasant dish. But today, she decided to mix it up a bit. She baked them soft, hollowed them out a bit, stuffed the potatoes with meat and veggies, then topped it with mashed potatoes. This was... an interesting experiment, the meat was well seasoned, mixed with diced onions, mixed veggies (peas, carrots, corn and green beans), salt and pepper, etc. The taste was glorious, and the plating delightfully pretentious, but admittedly, it's a rather troublesome recipe to put together. If you're trying to impress someone, go for it! But it did feel a bit silly.
For an added bonus, we had some fried potato skins as a chef's snack, a little shredded pepper jack cheese and bacon bits. This is a quick cheat, nuked in the microwave for a munchable while that tasty meat is still cooking, or else we'll keep picking at it. Chef's snacks are important! I have a suspicion this was the real reason for the strange presentation, to be honest. #ShitCookieDoes |
