Burgers aren't my most favorite, but boy howdy do I love these seasoned fries. They're also apparently one of the only places in town that have Dr. Pepper, which is PROBLEMATIC for me.
Oh man... I haven't had Rally's in YEARS. We used to get Checkers down in Orlando, and we had a Rally's at home (there was one across the street from the big bus depot in downtown Norfolk that I used to hit now and again), but in Tucson we got Checkers COMMERCIALS, but there wasn't a shop in town. I imagine there was one nearer to Phoenix or something, but it was TORTURE for me, because I just wanted some of those fries and we just didn't have any. So when I get into town and realize there's a RALLY'S AROUND THE CORNER, I legitimately squealed.

Of all of the lovely things that I've learned here in Tucson, I have to say that the food is definitely lifechanging. Quesadillas, chimichangas, nachos, the southwest spin on Mexi-cuisine... I love all of this. So my last hurrah, my swan song before I leave Arizona, was going back to Jason's Mexican Restaurant, which was a Mexican takeout spot right next to that short-lived call center job I had last year. Birthplace of Blake's Dungeon! Because magazines are weird.
Also, my favorite Sonoran Dog in town. Not too greasy, bacon-wrapped fried pepper on the side that you could torture yourself to whatever extent you prefer that day (I've noshed two dogs and two peppers on a day I hadn't eaten anything for breakfast, and I felt like a BAD ASS), and they have that sweet potato bread for the bun, which is one of my favorite things. It's also a good price (I want to say $5/dog if I remember right, writing this three years later), and was a staple, and a treat I always looked forward to when things were good. So I legitimately set aside time for myself to bus down there (clear on the other side of town from where I was staying!) just to have one last dog. Hasta luego, Tucson. it's been real. Hells yeah. Varsity.
I had an ex, who will not be named (maybe he will be, but not here) that spent some time in Atlanta, and when we went to visit he HAD to introduce us to the Varsity. Varsity is a little fast food joint stuck between the underside of the highway at the edge of college country, but the drive-thru line is AROUND THE BLOCK. They specialize in greasy goodness, hot dogs and chili cheeseburgers and onion rings... I went all out with a sampler pack, and even an apple pie just because. This isn't the proper Varsity, but any time I get a chance to have to fly somewhere, I like to pick the route that has a two hour layover in another city so I can get a taste of the town. Varsity has an outpost in Terminal C that I hit for lunch en route to Cleveland. Last time I hit here was me coming home from Tucson back in like... God. 2013? It's been a minute. Still good, but BOY HOWDY is it greasy, hahaha! Be prepared. Address on the map below is to the real deal, pics are from the airport! Mmm... Comfort food. Panda is always a good staple for cheering me up. Went for General Tso's and Beijing beef today, with white rice and mixed veggies. Much thanks to the Captain for this, I've been having a rough day. Going to try and make up for it this evening. Not having a great holiday.
If you haven't tried this new Brewhouse Burger at Jack In the Box, you need to. A little Worcestershire Sauce, a lotta beer cheese, lettuce, tomato, grilled onions... It shouldn't be fast food. That punch of tomato, that creamy cheese, that fantastic new bun... It's just a mouthful of happy. It's buttery and delicious and DOES legitimately make me want a beer. You know that I'm a sucker for beer cheese, guys. If you haven't tried this yet, you really should.
Another one of our favorite hang out spots, Raising Cane's. I had a roommate back home from Louisiana, who introduced me to the joys of Raising Cane's back when I was in Virginia, and of course I shared the hype when I found out they were opening one here in Tucson. And now I share it with you!
Eegee's!!! There's nothing quite so 'Tucson' as Eegee's. This Tucson-only chain of ice slush (made with real fruit! Has bits in, even) is a perfect way to cool down in the desert heat. Their limited time 'Flavor of the Month' eegees are especially fun -- Cookie's favorite is July's Watermelon flavor. Today, Cookie got a pina colada, and I got a half-and-half of lemon and strawberry... If you haven't tried the drink variation, lemon lime soda and lemon is totes amazing.
So, I'm on my way out at godawful-early in the morning ON A SATURDAY, no less, so we decided to hit Taco Bell for some breakfast on the way out, since they've got a new breakfast menu, and HOLY CRAP, WE'VE HIT A JACKPOT.
Biscuits and gravy crunch wrap. Sausage, gravy, hashbrowns, wrapped in a crunchwrap, and it is decadent. Like, my new favourite thing, for sure. They also have what I like to call a "Cali style" one, with avocado, tomatoes and an egg scramble. Got dem, dis tasty! You guys gotta try one of these! I'm not sure if Hot Dogs are a terribly popular thing outside of America, but here they're kind of a big deal. If it's pork or chicken franks, or beef or Kosher or otherwise... We've a lot of dogs. And we serve them a lot of different ways depending on where you're from.
